Daman Products ranks #51 in the Top 100 Indiana Companies and #3071 in Inc. Magazine’s 2013 Top 5000 fastest-growing private companies in the nation.
Daman’s revenue more than doubled from $9.3 million in 2009 to $19.5 million in 2012. That jump was good enough for a spot on Inc. Magazine’s list of the nation’s 5,000 fastest-growing private companies. Daman also added 54 jobs during that period. It now employs 127 people at its plant, which underwent a $1.75 million expansion last year.
The company’s owners, however, prefer not to talk about those numbers as much as they want to highlight how they got there.
Daman has an unusual operating model for a manufacturing business. Executives tossed the traditional hierarchy of shop foremen and the like when the company moved into a new building in 1997 on Mishawaka’s east side. In its place, they implemented a system of self-directed work teams, called cells, in which members are responsible for everything from ordering material, managing schedules and buying tools to shipping and inspecting products, and performing maintenance tasks.
“We’re not tracking the details of what people do around here on an hourly basis or even a daily basis,” said Larry Davis, the company’s president. “They have so much control. For people that want to take responsibility for what they do and be part of something that respects them, it’s an awesome place.”
